Long Home: A Family Business
Our story begins in 1945 when Henry “Tots” Long launched Long’s Fence Co. in a decommissioned bus at the corner of 18th St. NE and Rhode Island in Washington, D.C. — not far from the United States National Arboretum. It set in motion the events that would lead to decades of success.
Henry’s son, Robert, wrapped up a stint in the U.S. Merchant Marines in 1948. He returned to Washington, D.C. to join the family business he had supported with his service pay.
Robert, known to friends, family and colleagues as “Bob,” had ambitious plans for Long’s Fence Co. In 1961, he bought the family business from his father and transformed the small but successful venture into a thriving regional operation. The company grew to become a household name for fencing throughout the D.C. area.
Our company — whose name he shortened to Long Fence — began to flourish under its new owner. We became a national presence in both residential and commercial fencing. You can’t go too far in the D.C. Metro area without seeing Long Fence’s trademark quality fencing and that familiar blue and white fence sign.
